Three Insurance firms eye Sh5.6bn medical cover for teachers

The lucrative multi-billion-shilling tender to provide medical cover to 298,000 teachers in Kenya has attracted bids from three insurance companies.

Liaison Insurance, AoN Kenya and Clarkson Insurance are eyeing the annual medical cover worth Sh5.6 billion.

The contract will be for three years, unlike previously when it was annual.

The trio has quoted between Sh14.7 billion and Sh17.7 billion for the three-year contract.

7000 MORE TEACHERS TO BE HIRED BY TSC NEXT MONTH

The Government will next month hire more than 7,000 teachers to ease shortages across the country.

About 4,000 will be for secondary schools while the rest will be sent to primary schools, said Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“We intend to reduce the teacher-student ratio to a reasonable level. This will improve the quality of services delivered by teachers,” he said, adding that the State had allocated funds to ensure the transition rate from primary to secondary improved.

University graduates database set up in war on fake certificates

Employers will soon be able to access academic information on graduates from a State agency as the government races to curb the use of fake certificates in securing jobs.

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority has started a database that will have information on graduates from all levels of education.

The universities regulator has raised the alarm over increased use of fake degrees to secure employment in an economy with a shortage of openings in the job market.

Teachers medical cover extended by three months

The Teachers’ Service Commission has extended the just-ended one year comprehensive medical cover for teachers by three months starting July.

Multiple sources within the commission said the decision to grant AON Kenya Insurance Brokers an extension was reached on June 30.

“Since we had not procured afresh for the scheme, the idea to extend the contract has been on the cards for the last one month pending further decision,” a source said.
