ministry to hire bursars for schools

The government will take over the employment of bursars and deploy them in schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said his ministry was working with the Public Service Commission on how their employment would be carried out with the aim of streamlining the management of public school funds.

Once employed, said Dr Matiang’i, the bursars would be subject to transfers to any part of the country like any other public servant.

“The employment and transfers of bursars will ensure competent and professional staff is entrusted with the handling of school finances,” said Dr Matiang’i at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa on Thursday during a meeting with principals of Catholic-sponsored schools.

The principals are on a week-long conference under the auspices of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops for Education and Religious Education.

The group’s chairman, Bishop Maurice Muhatia, asked the ministry to integrate the teaching of values in the curriculum, saying education was a transformational tool.
